WORKSHOP 1: HAZARDOUS MATERIAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE, FRIDAY, 9 to 4 pm

COURSE OUTLINE:

Session 1. Introduction to Hazardous Material  (HazMat) Incidents Response
This session will include an overview of hazardous materials incidents, including some existing policy guidelines.
 
Session 2. Recognition and Health Effects of HazMat Incidents
This session will introduce the UN Classification for hazardous material. Specific examples of commonly encountered chemicals using the toxidrome approach will be used to illustrate the risk associated with toxic industrial chemicals including their health effects.
 
Session 3: How to use the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) 2004
Participants will learn how the ERG is used to guide the first responders during the initial phase.  Practical case scenarios will be prepared to provide the participants the opportunity to have a first hand experience in using the guidebook through a small group discussion that will be facilitated by the trainers.  Participants may choose to continue their group discussion during the lunch break

Session 4: How to Use the ERG 2004 Case Scenarios
The participant will briefly present the outputs of their group discussion.
 
Session 5. Hazardous Material Response Procedures

A brief discussion on isolation, response, proper protective equipment and decontamination
 
Session 6  Best Practice and Lessons Learned from an Actual Response to a HazMat Incident
A brief case study on a multiple chemical spill in a school will be used to illustrate best practice and lessons learned
 
Session 7: Summary, Recommendations and Conclusions of the Workshop
General and specific learning objectives will be provided once participants register for the course or upon request.

organized by ISDE under the technical guidance of WHO HQ, 9 AM to 4:00 PM (includes lunch)
